More people than ever before get most of their information from social media. This includes not only platforms like Facebook and X, but also Instagram and TikTok. Many successful businesses use social media as their sole form of client outreach. However, some companies do the opposite and only have a website. It can seem confusing, but just like with any form of marketing, both websites and social media have their strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Social media pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Simple and easy to use

  • Usually free

  • Relatively quick setup

Cons:

  • Incredibly oversaturated

  • Posting can be difficult to keep up with

  • Don’t always own your content

  • Can lose control

Website pros and cons

Pros:

  • High degree of control and security

  • “Legitimizes” your business

  • Updates don’t need to be as frequent as social media

  • Can be expanded later

Cons:

  • More work on the front end

  • More expensive to hire a web designer

  • Can take more time to grow exposure

In the constantly changing world of digital marketing, “one-size-fits-all” doesn’t really apply. The important thing to remember is that every entrepreneurship is different. The pros and cons of both websites and social media should be considered, and the decision made based on the company’s goals and needs.
